-Go to the online doc — http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress
-Check requirements
PHP 5.2.4 or greater
MySQL 5.0 or greater
The mod_rewrite Apache module
-According to 1and1.com (my current Service Provider):
Linux Shared Hosting
Language Version
Apache 1.3.34
Perl 5.8.8
PHP4 4.4.9
PHP5 5.2.17
PHP6 6.0.0-dev
MySQL 5.0.91
GD Library 2.2.1 with GIF support
Mentioned that I can do mod_rewrite (.htaccess file)
-Take a backup. Good practice to do this, considering there are various posts in there I’d like to preserve if anything happens.
Many ways to make backups of files and databases. Mati Fuller likes a plug-in called “WordPress Online Automated Backup” — which I can’t use because only tested thru version 2.7 and I have 3.01, and need to upgrade to 3.1.3.
–I found another plug-in called “WordPress Backup to Dropbox”. This didn’t see to backup, so now I’m just going to do the FTP backup using FileZilla
—http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
–OK. Now I’m going to try Snapshot Backup. Finally!!! A nice and simple utility that creates and dumps a .TAR file including database, files, etc into a directory that I can use FileZilla to copy down to my hard-drive. Here’s their web-link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/snapshot-backup/installation/
Continuing on with the upgrade now:
-Disable all plug-ins. Select all plug-ins and chose “Deactivate all”
-Get the latest WordPress zip (or tar.gz) file.
Unpack the zip file that you downloaded.
Delete the old wp-includes and wp-admin directories on your web host (through your FTP or shell access).
Using FTP or your shell access, upload the new wp-includes and wp-admin directories to your web host, overwriting old files.
Upload the individual files from the new wp-content folder to your existing wp-content folder, overwriting existing files. Do NOT delete your existing wp-content folder. -Do NOT delete any files or folders in your existing wp-content directory (except for the one being overwritten by new files).
Upload all new loose files from the root directory of the new version to your existing wordpress root directory.
-Actual command within browser to finalize the upgrade — http://paulgarth.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php (Note: I don’t have a /wordpress directory)
Yeah!! Done…
Well…
-Something about clearing cache to speed things up for users — I think this is a plug-in, so will come back later to this
-Need to enable plug-ins and also do updates
I’m tired of seeing the post from December, and it’s now end of April, so here’s a random post.
Lot’s of things happening:
-Got a new iMac so I assist with Senga’s web-page, flyers, videos, etc.
-Want to start playing with X-Plane Flight Sim on new Mac
-Interesting integration at work with Holacracy
-Getting ready to do a Domino/Notes Upgrade to version 8.5.x
-All kinds of other projects at work
-Interesting Projects with CERT, Ham Radio and Red Cross using Depiction Mapping
-Need to get back into making this blog something decent
Well… That’s my post for now.
